Cause analysis and countermeasures for surface misting of high aluminum glass produced by float method

In the journal "Journal of Materials Science and Engineering", Volume 40, Issue 6, 2022, “HNHT”published a paper titled "Cause analysis and countermeasures for surface misting of high aluminum glass produced by float method", which belongs to the scientific research achievements of the key research and development support project of Hainan Province (ZDYF2019019).

In this paper, using shielding gases with different hydrogen to nitrogen ratios in the tin bath, the effect of the ratio of hydrogen to nitrogen in the shielding gas on the hazing of high aluminum glass during float glass production was investigated. The samples were characterized by SEM-EDS, spectrophotometer, glossmeter, and X-ray energy spectrum, and the causes of haziness in the production process of float glass were analyzed. The haziness problem was solved.

The conclusion shows that the surface haziness of high aluminum glass produced by float process is mainly caused by excessive hydrogen content in the tin bath and strong reducing ability of the protective gas, resulting in a partial reduction of SnO2 on the glass surface to form SnO or Sn; At the same time, the space evaporated tin oxide also undergoes an oxidation-reduction reaction with H2 to form SnO or Sn. The specific optical performance is that the glass haze increases, the upper surface glossiness decreases, and the lower surface has no significant change. To solve this problem, gradually reduce the hydrogen content in the protective gas in the tin bath and the proportion of hydrogen in the high-temperature zone until the glass returns to normal.
